Bare Root | 6ft Tall | By Direct Plants
Renowned for its striking, ornamental bark and refined natural form, Prunus tibetica — commonly known as the Birch Bark Cherry — is supplied as a premium bare root tree at 6ft tall by Direct Plants. Grown and carefully selected at our award-winning family nursery in Norfolk, this elegant tree is valued for its year-round architectural interest and exceptional garden presence.
Best known for its smooth, copper-brown bark that peels decoratively to reveal pale, birch-like layers beneath, Prunus tibetica brings texture and warmth to the winter garden. Subtle spring blossom and fresh green foliage complete its seasonal appeal, making it a sophisticated choice for discerning gardeners.
(Prunus tibetica – Ornamental, approx. 20–30ft / 6–9m at maturity)
In early spring, Prunus tibetica produces small, delicate white flowers, followed by fresh green foliage that turns soft golden-yellow in autumn. As the leaves fall, the tree’s distinctive exfoliating bark becomes the star feature, offering outstanding winter interest. With its upright habit and elegant branching, it is particularly well suited to specimen planting, woodland gardens, and contemporary landscapes.
Fully hardy and adaptable, this variety thrives in most soil types and prefers a sunny or lightly shaded position. It performs best when planted directly into the ground, where it can develop its natural form and bark character to full effect.

Soak roots in water for 1–2 hours before planting
Dig a hole wide enough to allow the roots to spread naturally
Position the tree so the root flare sits at soil level
Backfill, firm gently, and water thoroughly
Stake during establishment, particularly in exposed positions
Mulch around the base (keeping clear of the trunk) to retain moisture
Water regularly throughout the first growing season
Once established, Prunus tibetica is low-maintenance and highly rewarding, offering year-round interest with minimal intervention.
