Medlar Tree
(Quince A Rootstock – Semi-Dwarf, 10–13ft / 3–4m at maturity)

Nottingham – A traditional English medlar producing small, round, russeted fruits with open calyxes and firm flesh. Fruit is harvested in late October or November and must be bletted (allowed to soften naturally) before eating. Once ripe, the flavour becomes sweet, aromatic, and complex – often compared to spiced apple, dates, or cinnamon pear. Ideal for preserves, jellies, or eating with cheese and wine. Self-fertile, hardy, and slow-growing – perfect for smaller gardens, heritage orchards, or as a specimen tree.

Planting & Care Guide (Bare Root Trees):

Our trees are delivered root-wrapped in moist compost, ensuring they arrive nursery-fresh. This means you don’t need to plant immediately — they’ll stay fresh for several days or even several weeks, giving you time to plant at your convenience.

  • Soak roots (still wrapped or unwrapped) in a bucket of water for 1–2 hours before planting to hydrate

  • Dig a hole large enough to spread the roots comfortably, and position the tree so the graft union sits just above soil level

  • Backfill with soil, firm in gently, and water thoroughly

  • Stake if required, especially in exposed areas

  • Mulch around the base (avoiding the trunk) to retain moisture and suppress weeds

  • Keep well-watered through the first growing season. Prune lightly in winter to shape and encourage strong growth

With proper care, your Nottingham Medlar tree will reward you with striking spring flowers, rich autumn fruits, and a truly unique harvest experience for years to come.
